Programs

The fellowship (graduate) and scholarship (undergraduate) programs have been a special strength of the OSGC. We consider students the primary focus of Space Grant since they represent Oklahoma’s future in science, mathematics, engineering, technology, geography, and other aeronautics and space related disciplines.

Our efforts are in concert with Space Grant Law, the National Program Objectives, and The National Strategic Plan priorities:

Provide aerospace related research and educational experiences for graduate and undergraduates in order to encourage careers in these fields with special emphasis on attracting underrepresented minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.

Undergraduate Scholarships

We award scholarships to promising undergraduates who express an interest and aptitude for aeronautics and space related science and education. Historically, the awards to undergraduates are considerably less than those for graduates. The type of award is as unique as the institutions and student populations. To inculcate a sense of social responsibility, undergraduates are required to commit a certain number of hours each semester to supporting space-related activities within the state. For example, scholarship recipients serve as judges for district or state science fairs, tutor elementary children in math and science, help OSGC institutions conduct general public and K-12 programs, and make presentations on behalf of the Consortium. Other scholarship recipients serve as “NASA Space Grant Interns”. While research is strongly encouraged for awards at the research intensive institutions, OU and OSU, it is not required.

Graduate Fellowships

Fellowship students utilize awards to advance their research and progress towards graduate degrees in aeronautics and space related disciplines. This takes on many forms: stipends while working with faculty involved in aeronautics and space related research, travel to professional conferences, travel to NASA Field Centers to meet with scientists, and marginal funds for lab supplies. We have been able to garner additional funding each year for graduate fellowships through the lead institution’s Vice President of Research and OSU’s successes in obtaining funds through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

Internships and Co-ops

OSGC collaborates with the various NASA Field Centers to place qualified Oklahoma students from our affiliated institutions to participate in co-op or internship programs. The NASA Field Centers are located throughout the United States.
